Being a new manager In the UK at least, people tend to be promoted on the basis of technical knowledge rather than management skill.

It’s common to hear from ex-soccer players who have gone from playing to managing say that it is very difficult going from “one of the lads” to telling someone they aren’t in the team for a big match.

So how can a new team leader start their management career without upsetting previous close friends and colleagues?

1. There is no going back - the relationship has fundamentally changed. People will now look to YOU for answers.

2. Be discrete in your celebrations. Some of your friends may have been unsuccessful at the selection process or worse still, may not have been given an interview.

3. Think about how you talk to these people and how they talk to you. Depending on your factory or office, shouting across to someone at the other side of the room to get attention may no longer be appropriate. You might have a desk or even your own office. Do not under estimate the power of either!

4.Consider how and where you socialise with people who still do what you used to do. Getting drunk every Friday night is probably not a wise move if you want respect on Monday morning (but that depends on your industry…)

5. Try to sport when they are testing you. Like it or not, people you used to sit alongside will try to test you out. Will you go down to skeleton staff levels when the it’s almost holiday time? Who will cover the office if you do?

6. Work out a strategy to deal with being “tested”. Your new staff will “test” you – work out (even subconsciously) how far they can push it. You must work out how to cope with this or you will have lost control immediately. You could pick several issues which you will not move on. These could include, cover out of hours or maximum number of coffee breaks. Don’t tell anyone what these are though and they won’t work you out as quick.

Organisation:- means organising staff and resources to achieve business objectives. At the lowest level, it could be a frontline supervisor organising staff breaks so that the office is staffed.

Of course organising lunch breaks isn’t a good use of team leader/management time and so the key is to delegate some management functions. In this case, to spend time making sure that staff can arrange their own lunch covers AND make sure cover is constant.

Delegation: - means that a manager can ask a lower member staff member to do part of the managers’ job without pay or even wider recognition.
So in the Barack Obama example; he will remain responsible (to the American people) but he has delegated the task of improving health care to people lower down in his organisational team.

Delegating successfully is an essential skill for managers to master:

Firstly, you must trust the person you are delegating to do the task. This is not only to trust them not to foul up the task but to keep you posted as to progress.If you ask them to look at some online training, you must be able to trust that they haven’t been messing around on facebook or twitter instead.

And they must trust you – that they haven’t been given a “lame duck” or something they are going to get stuck with or is likely to cause them a lot of trouble or hassle.

Secondly, there are likely to be issues of skill level and training. You shouldn’t expect an untrained person to carry out a task beyond their skill levels (you need to take into account safety considerations etc.You must not to ask them to do a task you couldn’t or wouldn’t be able to do.

Thirdly, there is the art of selecting the right person.
Not everyone is able or willing to do more than what is on their job description. A ‘jobs worth’ mentality can prevent some people from even entertaining the idea!

The good news is that if you learn how to to delegate successfully and find staff members to trust, it will feel like you have grown a spare pair of hands. Things get done without you necessarily asking.
From the individuals point of view, learning new skills and improving is a good way to prepare for a promotion or career move.

So either way learning to delegate (or at least knowing the difference between delegation and organisation) is an essential management skill to learn.
